Condition

Original canvas, which is slightly uneven in places. There are light stretcher marks visible to the right and left inner frame edges. There are light lines of craquelure. UV light reveals spots of retouching. Some pigments fluoresce under UV. Held in a thin black painted modern wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

Like so many other painters and writers, David Burliuk was drawn to the fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and travelled there frequently from the 1920s to the 1940s in order to escape the chaotic bustle of New York City.  He found inspiration amongst the rolling hills and serene countryside, and he was not alone in his love for the area—artists including Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, and George Bellows all returned frequently to the town.

The present lot was painted in 1926, the same year Burliuk published his Radio Style Manifesto. A brilliant colour palette and swirls of vibrant, intersecting strands of colour in the sky and trees create the feeling of dynamic waves of energy, pulsing through the landscape. This energy reflects off the rooftops, encompassing the entire composition to create the feeling of powerful force, and the rolling hills and lush landscape of Gloucester fill the canvas, barely containing the life and vivacity of the town.
