Catalogue Note

This work was executed in 1952.

Born in Georgia, Olga Sacharoff settled in Spain in 1915 with her husband the photographer Otto Lloyd. A year later, the couple made Barcelona their home, while Sacharoff continued to exhibit in Paris to great acclaim and was frequently compared to Marie Laurencin. She also collaborated with Francis Picabia on the Dadaist magazine 391.

In later years, Sacharoff's style changed to encompass the local Catalan influences and her growing interest in local customs. The present work is a charming example, depicting a local dance named the Sardana against the background of a verdant countryside. Sacharoff's works can be found in several Spanish museums, notably the National Art Museum of Catalunya.
