Catalogue Note
Vladimirov was a celebrated painter of battle scenes, whose depictions of the First World War were featured in British newspapers. Some years earlier, Vladimirov had been sent by Count Leo Tolstoy, the vice-president of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, to cover the 1904 Russo-Japanese conflict. The present work may have been executed during the artist's posting to the front.
