Catalogue Note

General Benjamin Lincoln is notable for being involved in three major surrenders during the war; Battles of Saratoga, Siege of Charleston, and, as George Washington's second in command, he formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown.  General Lincoln also ordered the last attack on Fort Ticonderoga on September 13, 1777.  The raid was led by John Brown and was part of a three pronged attack in the north as General Lincoln declared “to amuse the enemy.” General Lincoln also hoped of securing the release of American prisoners and destroying military stores. Because of the sword's provenance it was exhibited at Fort Ticonderoga for nearly 50 years. A similar sword is illustrated by George Neumann in Battle Weapons of the American Revolution, (Scurlock Publishing Co., Inc., 1998), p. 357, no. 161.SS.
