of rectangular form with a leaf carved edge with a grotesque mask at each corner flanking acanthus and scrolls on a stippled ground, the pierced inner frame carved with ribbons, the reverse with a printed paper label Fratelli Pacetti, Firenze, with an iron hook at the rear; rebacked; regessoed and regilded

Provenance

Bonhams, London, 30 June 1988, lot 52.

Condition

In overall good conserved condition. There are traces of the original gilding which is worn in places and dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. There are some minor chips generally and hairline cracks commensurate with age and usage and some old very minor restorations to the breaks in the carving e.g the ribbon sections. A small section approx 8cm wide has been cut out from the edge at the top of the frame to acommodate the iron hook. Very nicely carved especially to the grotesque masks. The lower edge has suffered some losses revealing the soft carcass wood and the lower right mask has a red residue which is probably bole and would benefit from regilding.
