Catalogue Note

Mourlot was quoted as saying that Picasso 'wanted the trial proofs begun again 3 times, and for a very long period, did not give the pass for press.’

The present image was originally drawn on December 7, 1957, as indicated by the date printed in yellow at the upper, left corner. This subsequent proof is dated January 15, 1958. Visible here and then removed from the editioned impressions are the thumbtacks drawn in the corners, and the roman numerals noting each ‘state’ of the lithograph. These differences illustrate the development of the print and the time lapse between beginning and finalizing the composition speak to the artist's dedication to the printmaking medium.
