Description
- Madonna and Child enthroned, behind them four angels
- remains of an inscription along the lower edge of the frame
- tempera on panel, gold ground
- approximately 32cm by 25cm wide; 1ft by 10in
worked with a vase of polychrome silk flowers on a leather panel, mounted within a gilded frame,
Condition
The picture is slightly lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The painting is on a flat stable thick panel which has been heavily cradled. There are two vertical cracks from the top edge, upper centre and upper right. The crack, upper centre has resulted in a paint loss in Christ's drapery and the crack extends beyond. There are two vertical cracks that extend from the lower panel edge, centre left with minor associated losses and centre right again with minor losses. The colours have gone in the angels garments and they have likewise faded in the Virgin's cope revealing the ground as well as minor surface abrasions in the centre. Examination under ultraviolet reveals several campaigns of mainly cosmetic retouching, mainly concentrated in the flesh tones and in the darker pigments. There is also extensive retouching to the blue of the virgin's cope. The punchwork remains in very good overall condition. Offered in a simple engaged gilt wood slip style frame.
