  • SELECTED FAMILY PORTRAITS
  • Daguerreotypes
2 quarter-plate daguerreotypes comprising Two Women with Baby and Child attributed to John A. Whipple (1823-1891) and Three Siblings by Charles H. Williamson (active 1840s-50s), the second with hand-coloring and 'C. H. Williamson, Brooklyn' stamped on the mat, each cased, 1850s (2)

Condition

Three Siblings (C. H. Williamson) - There is heavy tarnish that follows the mat's shape, and several small rust-colored areas overall. This plate is not sealed and the original seal is no longer present. The case is in very good condition, with wear primarily along the edges. The leather hinge appears to be modern. The number '150' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the case interior. Two Women with Baby and Child (attributed to John A. Whipple) - This exquisitely rendered family portrait is generally clean. Upon very close examination in high raking light, faint warm-toned discoloration and several tiny rust-colored spots are visible in the central and lower portion of the plate. There is a small scratch in the lower right corner, not affecting the image. The back of the plate is silvered, suggesting that it was electroplated with an additional layer of silver by the daguerreotypist. This plate has a new seal, and the following is written on the seal in ink: 'resealed 7/11/88' and 'scovilles manuf. co extra.' The brass protector is separating at the upper right corner. The push-button leather case is worn, but remains functional.
