Description

  • Robert Frank
  • 'SAN GENNARO, FESTIVAL' (DOLL/NEW YORK)
  • Gelatin silver print
signed, annotated and dated 'NYC 1948' in ink and with the photographer's copyright stamp, with credit and date in ink and title in pencil, and his 'Robert Frank Archive' stamp, with number '101' in pencil, on the reverse, 1948-9, probably printed in the 1960s (Black White and Things, p. 25; Moving Out, p. 34; Looking In, pl. 51, p. 109)

Condition

This photograph, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. Upon close examination, the following are visible: a 4-inch soft linear crease extending from the lower edge of the image; a small sharp handling crease in the central area; and a few small scratches overall. There is a 2-and-3/8 inch white margin along the right edge of the image. The lower corners are creased, and the edges are rubbed. On the reverse of the print, the Robert Frank Archive stamp is titled and annotated '101' in pencil and the photographer's copyright stamp is credited and dated '1978' in ink. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce faintly.

Catalogue Note

This image appears in the photographer’s first planned book of photographs, Black White and Things.  The volume was published in 1994 by the National Gallery of Art from Frank’s original 1952 maquette, and was divided by him into three parts, as suggested by the title.  ‘Doll/New York’ (titled here ‘San Gennaro Festival’) appears in the Things section, along with evocative photographs of, among others, a float in the Macy’s parade, a table by the sea in Mallorca, and a horse-drawn cart in Paris.
