Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • 'CHEESE STORE: 276 BLEECKER STREET, MANHATTAN'
  • Gelatin silver print
numbered '197' in the negative, the photographer's '50 Commerce St., New York City' studio and Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' stamps and with title, date, and annotations in colored pencil on the reverse, 1937 (Yochelson, Greenwich Village, pl. 9)

Condition

This photograph, on lightly-textured double-weight paper with a slight surface sheen, is in generally excellent condition. Upon close examination, a few tiny scratches and small, soft handling creases are visible, primarily near the edges. Uneven, faint silvering is visible in raking light. In the upper margin edges, there are small clamp impressions. The black margin edges and corners are worn, with resultant chipping and small losses of emulsion. The reverse of the print is slightly age-darkened at its periphery. On the reverse of the print are the following annotations in colored pencil: 'Neg. 197'; 'Code III-A and II-C-I'; and '2/2/37.'
