Description

  • Irving Penn
  • 'OPTICIAN'S SHOP WINDOW'
  • Gelatin silver print
selenium-toned, signed, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil and stamped on the reverse, framed, 1939, printed in 1983, one in an edition of 65 (Still Life, unpaginated)

Condition

This glossy, selenium-toned print is in generally excellent condition. The following are visible upon close examination in raking light: a few tiny deposits of expertly applied original retouching; and a small, soft crease near the lower edge. There is a barely perceptible linear wave running the length of the print in the central area. The lower right margin corner is bumped, and there are 2 very small chips in the emulsion along the upper margin edge. On the reverse of the print, the Condé Nast copyright stamp is dated '1948' and 'renewed 1976' in pencil. The edition stamp indicates that there are no more than '65' signed silver prints of this image. The following notations are also written in pencil on the reverse of the print: 'New York, 1939 (?)'; '(Version B)'; 'Print made 1983'; and REF. '12531.'
