Catalogue Note
Samuel S. White 3rd and Vera White assembled important examples of modern art, Asian art, and illuminated manuscripts that they eventually donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1924 they commissioned a group of photographic portraits from their friend Man Ray, and he gave them his famous portrait of Marcel Duchamp in the guise of Rrose Sélavy, now a prized treasure of the Museum’s photography collection.
