Condition

This piece is in good to medium general condition. The plate has been gold-toned. With light oxidation allover the sight area, with 4 horizontal very light scratches in the centre of the image. In a 19th century mount which shows a vertical scratch at approx. 1,3 cm from the left edge.

Catalogue Note

Ce portrait de Frédéric Guillaume de Prusse (né en 1831 à Potsdam) figure parmi les premiers portraits daguerréotypés en Allemagne. Le garçon a probablement 10 ans, ce qui était l’âge du premier uniforme chez les Hohenzollern, nous permettant de dater l’objet vers 1841. La daguerréotypie fut pratiquée à Berlin dès 1839 par Louis Sachse, Theodor Dörffel et Edouard Petitpierre. Dès 1840, Sachse parvint à réaliser des portraits au daguerréotype, et fut appelé à la cour royale de Prusse, dans la résidence de Charlottenbourg, pour faire une démonstration de ce nouveau procédé.
