Catalogue Note
It seems probable that this beaker commemorates the battle of Slankamen of 1691, in which Austria and her allies, under the command of Louis William Margrave of Baden (Türkenlouis, 1655-1707) finally and heavily defeated the Ottoman Turks. The battles of this war ( 1683-1697) were often commemorated in silver. A silver-gilt triumphal chariot, resting on bound Turkish prisoners, by Marx Merzenbach, Augsburg, circa 1690 now in the Städt Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg (inv.nr. 9179) is thought to represent the Margrave in triumph at the same period.
