Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. English portraits are very often in less than good condition; fortunately, Raeburn's technique seems to be undamaged and is very effective in this painting. The only restoration is in the arm in the lower left, where a small group of retouches have been applied. The ruff, details in the face and clothing, are all beautifully preserved and show no restorations. The canvas has an old lining, but the work seems to be clean and should be hung in its current state.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to both David Mackie and Duncan Thomson for independently endorsing an attribution of this lot to Sir Henry Raeburn on the basis of photographs.  The Portrait of Captain David Kinloch will be included in Mackie's upcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist under Mackie no. 452.
