Condition

For a high resolution digital image, please refer to the online catalogue at Sothebys.com or contact a member of the Old Master Paintings department. These very large canvases are in beautiful condition. Both have canvas seams across the middle, but with minimal retouches along the seams. For works of this size, there are surprisingly few retouches throughout, and most are cosmetic, a few are in the laurel and a few scattered in the background. The varnish is fresh and not discolored. These can be hung in their current state. Both are in elaborate carved gilt wood frames.

Catalogue Note

A pupil of Abraham Godyn, Martin Jozef Geeraerts trained in Antwerp, where he worked as a portraitist and history painter.  He is perhaps best known for his paintings en grisaille such as the present works which bear the distinct influence of his Dutch contemporary, Jacob de Wit. This richly ornate pair is typical of Geerarts style, showing groups of tumbling putti, smoothly rendered, with impeccably foreshortened limbs and painted in neutral tones in imitation of a stucco relief.

This pair of grisaille is offered in elaborate English rococo frames, possibly copied from a French design.
