Condition

Relining is firm and stable. the paint surface has been slightly pressed in the relining and is under a very dirty and discolored old varnish. painting overall still reads quite well. due to the thick varnish, it is not possible to see anything under ultraviolet light. to the naked eye, it appears that there may be an old repair near the upper right edge and another area at lower left corner. offered in a gilt and painted wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The present work repeats El Greco's Saint Francis of Assisi Receiving the Stigmata, a subject which El Greco painted in a number of different compositional variations. This particular composition is characterized by Wethey (see H. Wethey, El Greco and His School, Princeton 1962, pp. 118-19) as the "Escorial Type", after the prime version in the Escorial.
