Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has a very old lining, but it seems to have been cleaned more recently. However, there is a lovely and original patina to the paint layer which is certainly unusual. Under ultraviolet light small spots of retouching can be seen in isolated areas in the background. There are very few retouches of any note in the face and beard. There are a few more in the darker colors of the neck and gown at lower right, but the condition is very good overall, and the picture is ready to hang in its current state.
