Condition

The painting is slightly brighter than it appears in the catalogue illustration. For a high resolution digital image, please refer to the online catalogue at Sothebys.com or contact a member of the Old Master Paintings department. The canvas has an old glue relining with some losses to the right edge. The paint surface overall is in good condition; though the darks have sunk a little into the background upper left the detail of the vase is very well preserved. There is minor frame abrasion to the upper and lower edges. Inspection under UV, though impeded by a milky varnish, reveals minor retouches throughout the dark background. There is minor strengthening, notably to the outline of the vase on the left side of the composition, to the outline of the recorder and the shadow of the violin. The painting is ready to hang in its present state and is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
