Description

  • Pieter Meulener
  • Sack of a Flemish village by Spanish soldiers
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Mariano Bello, Puebla, Mexico;
By whom given to the present owner.

Condition

Panel has been cradled. there is a central horizontal panel join visible to naked eye, more so on left side and near far right edge. some discolored old retouching can be seen along the join. overall the paint surface and detail is very well retained in the figures, foreground areas and architecture. some slight degree of thinness can be seen in background foliage. there are some losses at upper edge and a very small crack at upper right. examination under UV light: the varnish fluoresces unevenly making it difficult to read. there is retouching on the windmill, roof of church, and throughout sky and clouds. some retouching can be seen to some of the figures under the windmill and to some of the darks of background and landscape. the foreground and figures in foreground look good. this painting would benefit from a sensitive restoration and a re-adressing of some of the old restorations that could be done more skillfully. Offered in a black wood frame with some nicks.
