Catalogue Note
Frans Snyders is renowned for his depictions of still lifes and hunting scenes. He entered the workshop of Pieter Brueghel the Younger in 1593, but it was in fact Jan Brueghel, his master's younger brother, who had much more of an impact on his work and development as an artist. Snyders' interest in still life and animal imagery was no doubt encouraged by Jan Brueghel, who was also actively producing work in these genres.
This drawing may be compared with one depicting A Concert of Birds, sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 25 April 1983, lot 82.
