Catalogue Note
The view of this stretch of the banks of the Tiber, with the old customs house in the right distance and the bell-tower of S. Maria in Cosmedin further to the left, was much drawn by generations of northern artists who worked in Rome, from Pieter Bruegel the Elder1 to Isaac de Moucheron.2 A similarly dated drawing by Van der Ulft of the Temple of Minerva on the Forum of Nerva was formerly in the Butôt collection.3
