Description

  • Eight religious subjects, including the Life of the Virgin
  • All gouache on vellum

Condition

Laid down on cardboard, each within a gold border. Generally colors are fresh and vibrant, there are some losses of pigment and oxidisation. The colors are more subtle in reality and are not as harsh as the catalogue images. Some of the gouaches are heightened with gold. All eight are mounted together in a modern mount.

Catalogue Note

These finely executed gouaches, and those in the following lot, appear to have been made by a Dutch, or possibly German, artist working in the first decades of the 17th century.  They reflect the stylistic influence of Leonard Bramer and Adam Elsheimer, who were two of the key northern figures in the fascinating artistic melting-pot of early 17th-century Rome.
