Catalogue Note

The present lot belongs to a series of drawings by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo of the same subject.  Byam Shaw remarks that there might be up to 102 in total, most of them numbered and signed as in the present example.   The largest number of drawings from this particular group, 14, are in the Correr Museum, Venice.  Byam Shaw believes the drawings were executed sometime after 1759, due to the relationship between them and Giovanni Battista's altarpiece in the Duomo, Este, which must have inspired Domenico to produce his series on this theme.1
