Catalogue Note

Although previously thought to be by Mauro Gandolfi, this attractive composition was decisively reattributed to his father Gaetano by Biagi Maino (op.cit.).  It was engraved, in reverse, by Luigi Tadolini as plate 17 in his album entitled Raccolta di Teste pittoriche inventate e disegnate a penna dal Sig. G. Gandolfi Accademico Clementina, a copy of which is in the Bibliothèque d'Art et d'Archéologie Jacques Doucet, Paris.  Biagi Maino suggests that it might be dated to 1785.
