Catalogue Note
Bernard Aikema writes that between 1753 and 1762 a large group of Character Heads were executed in the Tiepolo studio. These were produced, in part, to satisfy the demand in 18th century Venice for drawings of this genre, made popular by 17th century artists such as Rembrandt and Castiglione.1
The pen notations on the verso of the present sheet are familiar: they are found on the Tiepolo chalk drawings from the Bossi-Beyerlen collection. In his discussion of these drawings, George Knox proposes that the ink notations are in fact in Giandomenico's hand and refer to some system for organizing drawings in his studio. The later chalk numbers, however, seem to represent a Bossi-Beyerlen inventory and can be related to the sale (see George Knox, op. cit., vol. I, p. 206).
