Catalogue Note

The Château of Blandy-les-Tours is near Vaux-le-Vicomte, in the Seine et Marne region of France.  It was a 13th-century castle extensively fortified in the 14th century and rebuilt again in the 16th.  In the early 18th century it changed hands and the new owner dismantled it and turned it into a farm.  At the time Wille made this drawing, it had been bought by the Duc de Choiseul-Praslin, but was clearly still in a state of abandonment.  It has now been extensively restored.

Wille frequently made drawings of atmospheric ruins and ramshackle farmyards.  See, for example, The Ruins of the castle of Montfort Lamaury, sold New York, Christie's, 22 January 2004, lot 108.
