Catalogue Note

See note to lot 258.  This drawing illustrates Ariosto's vivid description of Angelica's turbulent ride to the shore, where a hermit awaits her: Canto VIII, verses 35-36, 45.  Fragonard's representation of Angelica must have been inspired by paintings of the Rape of Europa.
