Catalogue Note

Typical of the graphic style of Giovanni Battista della Rovere, this finished study for the decoration of a chapel could have been made in connection with his work at the Sacro Monte di Orta (Orta San Giulio, Novara).  There, between 1608 and 1616, della Rovere frescoed stories related to the life of St. Francis.  The artist's initials on the verso are possibly autograph, together with the date of 1616, which could accord with his work at the Sacro Monte.
