Condition

Laid down. There are several losses due to the ink biting into the paper, this is most visible in the horse's profile in the center of the sheet. The ink has sunk into paper and therefore not in very good condition. Some red staining marks upper right.

Catalogue Note

The Suidas note (loc. cit.) that the present drawing may be linked to several other compositions by Cambiaso of the Adoration of the Magi.  They discuss two paintings, one in the church of S. Giorgio in Moneglia1 and the other in the church of the SS. Annunziata di Portoria, Genoa,as well as a drawing for the same subject in the Uffizi, Florence.3  In fact more comparisons may be drawn between the two works on paper than the paintings as they both include the procession coming down the hill to see the Holy Family and the compositions are of a very similar structure.
