Catalogue Note
This is one of a series of drawings by Perino for two copes which he designed for Pope Paul III, with scenes from the lives of the founders of the Church, St. Paul and St. Peter. The two magnificent copes are mentioned in an inventory of the papal sacristy drawn up for Pope Paul, but unfortunately they have not survived.
Two wash drawings relating to this composition are known: one, which is pricked for transfer, in the Galleria nazionale delle stampe, Rome, and the other in the Uffizi. There is also an old copy at Chatsworth and a print, in the same direction, by Giulio Bonasone, dated 1547. There are four other drawings relating to the St. Paul cope, in the Uffizi, Chatsworth, Windsor and the British Museum. All are in the same oval shape as the present example.
Several drawings for the cope of St. Peter are also known, but these scenes are in a more elaborately shaped frame.
This note is based on Bernice Davidson, 'The Cope Embroideries Designed for Paul III by Perino del Vaga', Master Drawings, vol. 28, no. 2, Summer 1990, pp. 123-141, which gives a full account of the commission and the surviving related drawings and prints.
