Catalogue Note
Paolo Veronese started to experiment with the medium of chalk in around 1551, after his move to Venice, where he was exposed to Titian's chalk studies. A discussion by W.R. Rearick of a particular group of chalk studies on blue paper concluded that a number could be linked to known commissions, but others could only be ascribed to Veronese on stylistic grounds and have yet to be related to a particular project.1 The present drawing is possibly a preliminary study for the putto in Veronese's painting, Respect, part of the series, Four Allegories of Love, in the National Gallery, London.2 Rearick highlights Veronese's approach to the medium from his earlier attempts to his later more accomplished studies. The present sheet shows a soft handling of the chalk using vertical hatching to build up form.
The old attribution: di Paolo Veronese, partially cut on the present sheet, also appears on a number of other drawings by Veronese, but the collector who added these inscriptions has not yet been identified.3
