Catalogue Note

It has not been possible to find an attribution for this very charming and accomplished drawing.  The composition derives from Perugino who first devised it for the central panel of his altarpiece in the Certosa at Pavia.  The altarpiece was dismembered fairly soon, and the Virgin and Child, and two of the other panels, are now in the National Gallery, London.1  Perugino repeated the composition himself several times, with variations, the best version being now in the Galleria Palatina, Florence. It must have been widely admired for there is also a version by a follower of Pinturicchio. In the present drawing, the artist has changed the background significantly to include houses by a river, and he has omitted the angels above, making it a more intimate and tender image.

An interesting discussion of the Commendatore Genevosio as a collector can be found in Aidan Weston-Lewis, Raphael, The Pursuit of Perfection, exhib. cat., Edinburgh, National Galleries of Scotland, 1994, pp. 129-31.
