The canvas has been relined, and the lining is sound. The paint surface is a little worn, especially in the sky and as a result extensively retouched and restored. There is a large repair to the boy's chin and neck and retouching throughout his nose and forehead. There are further, though less extensive, small retouchings to the fingers of his right hand and the barrel that he clutches. Sold in a later wood frame.
