Description

  • Theodoor Rombouts
  • A card player showing his hand
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relatively recently relined and the lining appears sound. The paint surface is a little squashed in some regions and is showing the early signs of flaking in some localised areas, such as in the background immediately to the right of the sitter's head. Some flaking has clearly already occured as there are some in-filled losses on the playing cards and in a few other localised areas. The thick varnish prevents inspection under ultra-violet light but it is clear to the naked eye that there are retouchings throughout, especially to the areas in shadow such as the sitter's top lip, right cheek and hair. The painting would benefit from further restoration and cleaning. Sold in a gilt frame.
