Description
- Adrien Manglard
- A Mediterranean port with figures resting and fishermen drawing in their nets in the foreground, a tower beyond
- oil on canvas
Condition
The painting is richer in tone and fresher in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has a firm relining and as a result the paint appears to be thin in the darker pigments. The paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye except for evidence of an old craquelure and one very minor associated uplift in the paint in the sky just above the background hill centre left. Under a raking light there is also evidence of minor scattered flecks of discoloured retouching throughout the sky and the sea however these are only visible upon close inspection. In the catlaogue illustration there is, what looks like a white scratch in the sea below the cliff edge - this is not on the painting. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouching and reveals infilling to the aforementioned craquelure along the central band concentrated around the central crane. There is also very minor scattered retouching to foregorund lower centre. There is a thick milky uneven varnish overall. Overall the painting is in good condition and the restoration is just comsetic. Offered in an ornate gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition with evidence of old restored cracking.
