Condition

The picture is slightly fresher in colour and more mellow in tone than the catalogue illustration would sugeest. The paint surface is in good overall condition wih no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye apart from some minor losses to the upper and lower canvas edges. There is some very minor discoloured scattered retouching visible under a raking light in the background and in the blue of the dress. Also visible is the faint line of the central stretcher bar mark . There is some scattered surface dirt and a varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the varnish and aforementioned retouching and reveals some further scattered retouching to the red curtain and the chair. There is also some more minor scattered areas of strengthening to the costume and instrument as well as sympathetic retouching to some old vertical cracking in her decolletage. However the principal parts, namely the hands and faces are for the most part untouched. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.
