Condition

The colours of this work have survived well, not only in the vivid blue and green of the background and coat, but also the blue of the boy's eyes and the red of his lips. There are some minor areas of surface damage, where tiny amounts of pigment have been lost, these are all visible on the catalogue reproduction. The careful execution of the boy's hairline is still intact, and the detail lace of his collar is fantastically crisp. UV light shows a touch of restrengthening on the shadow of the the jaw and the cheekbone. There is a slight natural wave in the vellum. This work is beautifully preserved for its age. It is sold unframed.

Catalogue Note

This miniature can stylistically be dated to circa 1620 and has traditionally been identified as depicting a member of the Egerton family, from whom the current owners are descended. The most high-profile figure from that family was Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley, who served as Lord Chancellor between 1593 and 1617. Born in 1540, he married three times and it is possible, although not proven, that this miniature depicts a son from his third marriage, in 1600, to Alice, widow of Ferdinando, Earl of Derby (d. 1636). Descendants of Viscount Brackley lived at Tatton Park in Cheshire.
