Description

  • Studio of Jusepe de Ribera, called Lo Spagnoletto
  • Saint Peter
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The painting is a little less red than the catalogue suggests. The unframed canvas was relined in the mid 20th C and retains its tension. The paint surface is secured by a thick yellowed varnish; three cleaning windows have been opened. In the area lower right some old damage and losses can be made out under the varnish- these are visible in the catalogue reproduction. Some further minor surface scuffs are presetn. Inspection under UV light is not satisfactory due to the thick varnish but the paint surface does appear to be in good condition underneath it. Unframed.
