Condition
The picture is a little more muted in tone in the catalogue illustration and the colours are masked by a slightly blanching varnish. The canvas has been lined and the paint surface appears to be in very good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for some old retouching visible under a raking light in the lower right and then to the canvas edge upper right probably as a result of frame abrasion. There is also a little discoloured retouching at the top of her forehead as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the mottled varnish which makes proper inspection impossible however there is evidence of scattered cosmetic work in the flesh tones and in the aforementioned areas. Offered in a carved gilt wood and plaster black painted frame in good overall condition.
