Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has a relining, possibly from the mid-20th century, which is still effective. The condition of the dirty painting is almost enitrely readable with the naked eye. Several scattered localised retouchings have been applied, and some rather crudely restored holes can be made out on the right shoulder, centre left, as well as some further retouching upper right. Under the varnish the black pigments of the tunic appear to have sunken into the Neapolitan canvas though this will only be clear once the oxidised varnish has been removed. Despite some retouchings, the red sleeve is better conserved, as is the thick paint of the face and hands. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned past restoration and points to some minor further strengthenings in the face and hands.Offered in a later wooden frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The liturgy on the sheet is an extract from the Apostle's Creed, known in Latin as the Symbolum Apostolorum. According to Nicola Spinosa (see Literature), the style suggests a date of execution between the years 1630 and 1632.
