Description

  • Portrait of a man wearing a hat, a fortified town and landscape beyond
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel appears stable and flat. There is a slight undulation horizontally along the upper part of the panel detectable to touch. The paint layer is not flaking and is covered by an old varnish. There is a some fading in the colours, but the detail of the minute background figures, for example the horse, and the two monks are superbly clear and defined. A small patch of overpainting, measuring 1.5 cm on the lower edge, possibly to due to an old knock. Inspection under UV light reveals only some old refilling of small cracks in the paint across the sitter's black mantel, and the reinforcement of the single loose hairs around his head. This lot is sold in an old wooden frame with a variety of painted and incised decorative patterns, in fine condition.
