Description

  • Sir Peter Lely
  • Portrait of Charles I (1600-1649) with his son James, Duke of York (1633-1701)
  • inscribed on the letter lower centre: A Roy / Monsieneur
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The painting is slightly less red than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas is lined. The paint surface is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. The faint upper and lower stretcher bar marks are visible and there is surface dirt and a blanching varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the milky varnish which makes inspection difficult however there seems to be retouching to the aforementioned stretcher bar marks and strengthening throughout the foreground concentrated in areas of shadow. There are some flecks of retouching and strengthening throughout the costume too. There is also more recent retouching to what appears to be an old scratch upper left measuring approx. 3in. and to an old repaired diagonal tear measuring approx. 4 in in the curtain edge upper centre. Otherwise in country house condition. Offered in a Victorian gilt wood and plaster frame with minor losses.
