Condition

The canvas has an old lining which is sound. The paint surface is in fairly good condition- with the rigging largely intact, though with some slight rawness to certain areas of the sky. There are some restorations along the upper margin, a restoration in the centre of the canvas measuring approximately 3x6cm, some retouching to the leading topsail of the principal ship and some horizintal strengthenings to the water. There are some minor spot retouchings elsewhere. sold with a wood frame, with a gilt inside edge.

Catalogue Note

Two Dutch merchantmen are being careened so their hulls can be caulked, while two Men O' War are moored in the foreground, one with its sails drying. Zeeman painted the subject of ships being repaired and awaiting repair in the Amsterdam roads on several occasions, for example in a picture in the Willem Russell collection in Amsterdam (see L.J. Bol, Die Holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, Braunschweig 1973, pp. 290-1, reproduced fig. 292).
