Provenance

Anonymous sale ('An Important Private Collection from Hanover'), Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 27 March 2007, lot 20 (as Jan Porcellis).

Condition

The support consists of three horizontal planks, all flat, bevelled on all four edges and uncradled. The paint surface is generally well preserved and has been recently cleaned and restored. There are several areas of localised retouchings in the sky and a restored damage in the lower left. The painting requires no further attention and is ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

At the time of the 2007 sale (see Provenance) the lot was accompanied by a letter of expertise from Dr. Walter Bernt, dated 1970, attributing the work to Jan Porcellis. We are grateful to Gerlinde de Beer for confirming the attribution to Julius Porcellis and suggesting a date of 1640-1645 on the basis of digital photographs.
