Sale, Vienna, Kende, 11 and 12 March 1932, lot 40.

Exhibited

Vienna, Österreichisches Museum, 1873, no. 139 (according to a label on the reverse).

Literature

C. Hofstede de Groot, A catalogue raisonné of the works of the most eminent Dutch painters of the seventeenth century based on the work of John Smith, vol. III, London 1910, p. 300, cat. no. 522;

W. Suida in Kunstschätze der Sammlung Dr. Max Strauss in Wien, Vienna 1920, under cat. no. 68.

Condition

The panel is flat and cradled on the reverse. The paint surface is extremely dirty and the thick old varnish layers impede inspection under ultra violet light. However, several small restorations are visible to the naked eye, all in the background. The figure group itself seems quite nicely preserved.
