Description

  • A bordello scene
  • oil on panel

Condition

This panel has been cradled and is flat and stable. There are a few knocks to the upper and lower edges, which have largely been repaired, apart from one measuring about 1 cm at the lower centre. The paint surface is even and in excellent condition. The variety of colours in the costume and kitchen utensils are well-preserved and lively. There are spot retouchings throughout the composition, espeically to the figures in the centre and right background. Inspection under UV light reveals reinforcing of dark contours on female figures' clothing and cooking instruments by the fireplace and the swords carries by the man on the far left. The faces of the two ladies on the far left have been mostly untouched and are particularly lovely. A thick varnish covers the whole panel protecting the paint surface enhancing the vibrant colours that enliven this jovial scene. This lot is sold in a charming painted wooden frame, with blue patterning in the middle band that has been distressed to look older than it is.
