Description

  • Jan Theunisz. Blankerhoff
  • A coastal landscape with a threemaster lowering sails as a storm approaches, a ship wrecked on the lee shore nearby
  • signed on a rock lower right: BH (in ligature)
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

In the family of the present owners since at least the early 20th century.

Condition

The picture is less grey and the colours are richer than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is in very good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is a slightly discoloured varnish and some very minor flecks of dirt or paint in the foremost elevated castle as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Examination under ultraviolet reveals scattered minor cosmetic flecks of retoucing in the sky and in the sea along the lower canvas edge. The painting otherwise appears to be in good overall condition. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good condition.
