Condition
The painting is cooler in tone and less acidic in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The signed canvas has been relined and the paint surface appears to be in very good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for minor cosmetic retouching visible to an old horizontal mark measuring approx. 3 in. lower centre, above the table ledge lower centre which is visible only a raking light. Again visible only under a raking light are minor areas of scattered retouching to the background upper right and lower left. There is also a small vertical surface scratch running through the orange centre right as can be seen in the catalogue illustration and a very slighlty blanching varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouching and reveals further minor scattered retouching to the background. It also reveals infilling to an old craquelure in the wood of the box and very minor areas of stengthening to the forms i.e. the outline of the central glass. Overall however the principle parts are untouched and the painting is in good condition. Offered in a Dutch style black wood frame in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note
Though stylistically related to still lifes by Jan Davidsz. de Heem from the first years of the 1650s, this is in fact a fine work by Pieter de Ring as pointed out to us by Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, to whom we are grateful.
The lot is accompanied by the photostat certificate of Ingvar Bergstrom, dated 22 June 1989, attributing the painting in full to Jan Davidsz. de Heem.
