Description
- Allegory of music
- oil on panel
Condition
The colours are considerably less warmer and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel support is flat and stable and held by two old horizontal battens on the reverse. The painting is now dirty and its varnish discoloured. The paint surface has suffered from quite extensive wear and losses in the past most notably around the figures hair. The upper parts of the tree, and the lower right foreground foliage. In addition to this there are scattered number of more recent losses or surface indentation. Also numberous and smaller in size; these are scattered mostly in the right hand side of the sky and run down both the left hand and righ hand margins of the picture. There are a further group of small scattered old losses in the flesh tones, to the girls right eye, her bottom lip, her neck, chest. All of these losses and damages appear quite stable and the paint losses shows no further signs of lifting. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals no evidence of recent intervention but to the naked eyesome old discoloured repair is evident in some of the drapery folds and flesh tones.
This lot is offered with a modern composit painted and parcel gilt wood frame.
